Top Hiking Blogs
There are thousands of great hiking websites but this review is going to focus only on hiking blogs. Some blogs may be part of sites, but the main criteria is that the blog must be updated fairly often, still be active, and provide useful and interesting posts to lovers of the outdoors. If your hiking blog didn’t make the list send it to me and I’ll try to review it for a future post.
Yosemite Blog
I love all things Yosemite and the Yosemite Blog is my favorite place for a quick Yosemite vacation. The author, Loyd Schutte, was born and raised just outside of Yosemite and reports often on Yosemite news, travel tips, and current photos of the site.
Ubertramp
Nathan Richards is a British world traveler that is kind enough to share his journeys with the online world. He has managed to see a large portion of the world on a shoestring budget and offers expert advice on everything from keeping a travel journal to selecting a travel knife to staying safe in foreign showers. Many of the best hiking trips are combined with exotic travel and this fun travel and backpacking blog is a must read for the adventurous spirit.
Two-Heel Drive
Tom Mangan’s Two-Heel Drive hiking blog is a must read for those that live in the Bay area of California or that are planning a trip to the region. Tom’s writing style is easy to read and draws you in and keeps you. His blog is a little bit like those potato chips – you can’t read just one post.
Trail Journals
Trail Journals has been active for almost a decade and has the hiking trip reports from hundreds of people that have hiked some of the best trails in the world. Simply select a trail you are interested in and then browse the reports until you find a few that look interesting.
Best Hike
Can a hiking blog be called “beautiful?” That’s the best way I can describe the Blog for Best Hike. It’s sort of a one-stop-shop for all things hiking. They have excellent links to other hiking sites and provide first-rate hiking trip reports, tips, and other fun hiking info.
Backcountry Blog
Even though this blog is tied to a commercial site it has too much goodness to leave out of the list. And in all reality this is a company that is full of folks that love the outdoors and have found a way to ‘make a living’ selling products that relate to their passion. If you are a Backcountry.com customer and have an adventure to share they might post it for you. Don’t forget us here too as we are looking for your reports as well.
Natural Born Hikers
I usually run across this site while searching for hiking trails. This group of over 30 hikers has hit most of the best trails in North America and a few other amazing hikes around the globe. I love the reports and the pictures from this site. It’s a must have link in your favorites. The site is in need of an update but in reality all that matters is the quality of the trail reports and pictures.
These are my favorite hiking blogs and trip reports. I know there are many more great hiking blogs out there and I would like to find them all. If you know of a great hiking blog email me at geckotales @ gmail.com and I’ll consider it for review.
Take a Hike

They are all really good hiking blogs. I try to hit them all as often as possible, especially in the winter when I am not outdoors all the time. I cannot wait for the spring to get here.

Hi there,
Great website! really like your reviews.
Ive documented every hike Ive been on since I started hiking in May 2008. I decided to share all my pictures and information with the world via my blog (started Oct 2008), because I could not find any good picture guided routes via the internet or in a book.
I hope you will enjoy my hiking blog!
kind regards, Juanita
Thank you for all the great information! I appreciate the valuable links! My husband and I are avid hikers and have posts from the North Cascades, Utah, Juneau and Northern California. Please visit us at our website.
Have a Great Day!
I really like your site and found it very informative and helpful.
Hi there,
Just been browsing around for some inspirational hiking / walking blogs from the UK and internationally and found yours and wanted to say that it’s a really good read.
My partner and I recently camped out around the South Downs Way in the UK and trekked a lovely section from Pyecombe to Lewes via the highest point on the downs (Ditchling Beacon) and I’ve recently set up a blog that will primarily chat about walks we’ve done in addition to other bits and pieces like good wine, port, music (gigs), new bands to get into, and cheese!
We also recently went off to Yosemite National Park and consider it the most beautiful place we’ve been to. I’ve a stack of stuff to write about from there and my latest blog post features a piece about the Upper and Lower Falls. There will be loads to follow such as reports and anecdotes from the Mist Trail, Sentinel Dome and Chilnuala etc
I’m going to see about subscribing to your blog as found it really interesting but also wanted your opinions on my own style of writing as, as I mentioned, I’ve just started this trawl through the murky waters of blogging and any feedback would be appreciated.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the awesome list of blogs to read – some really great resources. As I drive south I’ll be posting trip reports of every hike I can sink my teeth into from Alaska to Terra Del Fuego, the southern-most point of South America. I already have quite a few up and am adding more weekly.
You can check it all out at my site, http://www.dangrec.com
Thanks,

Thanks – this is a great (and very helpful) list of hiking blogs. We’ve started a new blog with video and photo-rich reviews, including GPS coordinates and detailed driving directions, of camping and hiking / backpacking trails in Georgia and beyond – http://www.atlantatrails.com.
Nice site. Just started my own site at http://www.outdoorsblog.co.uk. HAVE A LOOK
I first started hiking over 25 years ago when I first joined the Cub Scouts and I have been enjoying hiking ever since. I just stared a web page. I made my first Hiking Stick right after I became a Boy Scout. I have been making them ever since. I still have my first Hiking Stick I made from the summer when I moved up from the Webblos to the Boy Scouts and I still use that Hiking Stick to this day. Each Hiking Stick that I produce is handcrafted using methods refined for over 25 years. In a process that takes over two years to complete, the wood is seasoned and crafted into a beautiful piece that will last.
I’ve also started my own blog about my hiking and snowshoeing in the mountains near Salt Lake City, UT.
I had another blog but ended up shutting it down without transferring the content. So the new blog doesn’t have a great deal of posts but, at a hike each week, it won’t take long to build up.
