According to Backpacker Magazine permits are now required to hike Half Dome. I’ve hiked this trail three times and once hiked it during a peak day when the crowds were heavy. The other two times I selected a week day early in the season. If you love hiking this is a must do trail, but if you hate crowds you’ll want to plan carefully. Avoid weekends and the summer vacation rush. The Half Dome Trail can be completed in one day or you can camp overnight to avoid the 16 to 18 mile one day push.
