What’s the Most Your Pack Should Weigh?

How much should you carry when hiking?  Some say you shouldn’t carry more than 1/3 of your body weight.  I say try to keep it under ¼ of your body weight.  The less weight you carry the more comfortable you’ll be on the trail.  Of course, you shouldn’t leave out items that will make your camp time comfortable either.  A nice meal and plenty of rest can go a long way toward making your trip more enjoyable.

Weight vs. Luxuries:  It’s really up to you.  Just try to minimize what you really don’t need and cut weight where you can.

There really is no equation for this. What I do know, and my friends in the military will back this up, is spread the weight around where possible. You are spot on with the luxuries mind. I’ve seen people strip their kit down to the minimum, only to regret it later. My advice: If you are out for more than six hours, have enough to last you till the morning. Think about the elements too; here in the UK you are a fool to not take waterproofs every time you venture onto the hill. That said, beware the kit monster! There is a really handy saying when it comes to buying travel kit: “All the gear, no idea!”

What did the hikers carry that did the trail in 65 days?

    Thanks.
